Household water powered generator
So why can't you install a mini turbine or paddle wheel generator on the incoming water line on your house?
It would not provide much power but it would be free.. Every time you take a shower, use toilet, wash hands you would be able to generate a bit of power.. Could power a battery to provide additional power to something in the house.. ![]()

Depends on the area, seems like the regulators here drop it down to 45-50psi but I could be wrong since I am not a plumber. |

dont think it would be practical, you would need to run the water all the time to keep a decent charge on the battery

uhmm its not going to suddenly discharge... and your water is running on and off all day.. it would have to be some kinda low current device.. though I have no idea how effiecent a gen that size is or how much you could get out of it.

i think his point is that without constantly running the water you are not going to get anything more than a double A battery out of it on a good day.

I think you could provide alot more power then that.. besides a AA battery Capacity would be enough to power the light is say a guest bathroom or something anyway?

Next to nothing. There are already units on the market that are sized for that type of application. http://www.homehydro.com/ City water runs about 85 psi. Flow though your average shower is about 5 gpm max. at that rate you'd be at about 22 watts per hour. So you'd have to run your shower all day long to keep a single CF light lit. And I'm sure some of the net gain is wiped out by added energy input required at the pumping station. Last edited by SteelDust : 03-18-2008 at 12:56 PM. |

just throwing the idea out not defending it.. However the bold statement I could care less about.. not going to be my problem.. its free to me.. now it would probably take 50 years to pay for the unit though.

No problem, I'm always coming up with odd ball things like that as well. I think I have a little bit of branch dividian in me somewhere. You're right payback at that point would take forever, especially with the price of power here in the NW. The big hydros take care of that for us. I actually have a pretty decent year round creek running through the property. It's flows up to 100 gpm in the winter, but I just don't have the elevation drop to make it worth a shiit for a small hydro unit. |

You can put a solar panel on your house to charge batteries that you use for a power outage and when there fully charged it puts the rest of the power in to the power grid and the power company takes money off your bill.

haha.. besides the initial cost of solar panels right now compared to what they buy back at.. not going to come out ahead.. However, the new technologies for creating panals with MUCH MUCH higher efficiencies like printing them using a system similar to an inkjet printer could change this soon.
